G-String???

Thursday, May 7, 2009

If you don't already know, I'm in HCISO, or Hwa Chong Institution String Orchestra. Something interesting that happened today was that my G-string broke. I'm perfectly serious. While trying to tune my viola, I found out that the fine tuner of the G-string was stuck fast; therefore I decided to use the coarse tuner. Surprise, surprise, the coarse tuner tuned way to coarsely and the string snapped. Hooray. Apparently they do not have any spare G-strings, so I've got to wait until Friday.

UPDATE: I've finally got my G-string!! Thanks to Zhao Hong, my Section Leader, who went in the weekend to get one for me. Thank you!! ;P Now I can play my viola properly.

Whoa i'm back after messing around w/ the class blog bcuz ppl need 2 tell me their blog links so that we all can get ACE points !! ;P
Anyway, today was rather hectic, so i will take a massive, whopping post to describe it. Hmmm.
Firstly, in the morning we had our 华岗论坛, or Chinese discussion. It was supposed to be about teacher-student relationships, but then the material changed due to some apparent "unsuitability". 房老师 told me yesterday that she was so pissed off. (Okay, she didn't actually say that but that's the main idea) I completely agree. That's why today we were in complete chaos, and spent 3/4 of the time going thru the materials. That left us with almost no question-asking time, when usually there would be more than enough.
房 老师 came in later and said that we were very co-operative. That...was surprising as a substantial number of people were doing homework and other stuff.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For Science today we did some experiments. I didn't expect it to be much; just the usual boring stuff. What was shocking was that we got to play with some magnesium.
Now, as we all [read: I] know, magnesium is a very reactive metal not to be played with. But that's what we did.
We heated up a magnesium ribbon, which was a really tiny piece of Mg. With strong enough heat, the Mg reacted and produced MgO2, giving off a lot of heat in the process. Also, it gave off a lot of light. Here are some quotes of pepole's descriptions of it:
It looks like a torchlight!
Wah, just like a mini-sun!
ARGH MY EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay the last one was fake, but you can probably understand how spectacular it was. It's fun burning stuff.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After school I had my EP3, HCISO. [read: STRING ORCHESTRA] Today we played some piece called "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" which you can hear here. Sounds awesome, eh? Each section individually was fine, but when we combined, it was total chaos. The rhythms were completely different. In the end we were dismissed before the problem could be resolved.
BTW we were playing at least one and a half the speed of the YouTube video. It sounds really slow.

Cell BBQ Party

Today (Labour day) is a public holiday, so no school! Well, I almost did nothing the whole day but mug and mug and do my homework like crazy. I was so relieved when there was a cell group barbeque party!! It was so fun. There was some great chefs doing an excellent job on the barbeques. What's more, there were absolutely NO activities arranged for us, so we could do whatever we liked! That means chatting, running around crazily and playing hid & seek around the second level. It was so huge and maze-like that it was very hard to find anybody. I chose the best hiding spot between a dustbin and a wall, and nobody saw me for a good 5 minutes. It lasted from 7-11+ which was really long, but really fun too. Man, I can't wait for my next cell group party!!

SYF

Today was SYF for String Orchestra and I got to skip school! ;P It was so fun. The performances by the various schools were excellent (mostly). We had a whale of a time there and time actually passed so fast--very soon we were on our way back to school again at around one o'clock.
Unfortunately there was a lunch at Sakae Sushi for the SYF players. The non-SYF players weren't invited!! Anyway the remaining few of us went to KAP to have lunch at the McDonalds there. We were telling jokes all the time and they were so funny! I had to return to school, of course, for my Purple Comet math competition at around 3pm. Well, that was a short hour of exhilaration; all of us were so worked up about solving the questions! ;P

Concert

I just went to a concert yesterday: King & Emperor at the Esplanade. The tickets were given out by Mr Tan BB quite a few months ago as a reward for a simple answering of a question. Well, actually Bowen got the tickets but he didn't want to go so he gave them to me.
Anyway, I went with my piano teacher (who was already interested in that performance). In the end, the four seats on our left and those on our right were empty. That means that nobody else went. It is saddening that Hwachongians are so unmusical; group bookings were meant to be good as they are cheaper, but now it seems they are wasted. :'(
